What has a two eyes, a snotty nose, and will completely destroy your precious Subaru from the inside? I’m thinking my toddler niece, but what’s worse? A juvenile black bear. Last week in Colorado, two Sheriffs aided in the release of a bear that made its way into a Subaru Outback. The bear made it…

Beyer Subaru would like to thank all of our amazing customers, staff and everyone in our local community who contributed to our Subaru Loves The Earth, e-waste Recycling Event! Many individuals who visited Beyer Subaru during the month of April were delightfully surprised when they encountered our donation box in the showroom and were shocked to find such a recycling program exists. Beyer Subaru is proud to support a cause that is so vital to the progression and succession of our community. Subaru of America is the forerunner of e-waste recycling during vehicle production.
A Better Future
Thirteen years ago, Subaru of America had a vision to develop an action plan in which to eventually build their vehicles without any excess garbage being distributed to landfills at any point during or after vehicle production. Their goal of becoming a Zero-Landfill status was originally targeted to be in effect in the year 2005. Three years ahead of schedule, in 2004, Subaru of America became the very first manufacturer in U.S. Automotive history to achieve Zero-Landfill status. Any excess materials produced during Subaru vehicle production are either recycled or re-purposed to create energy; leaving absolutely no reminisces of Subaru produced vehicles being sent to a landfill. Since then, Subaru of America has lead the way for over 800 companies including Boeing and Coca-Cola, through sharing their zero-landfill expertise.
The Subaru manufacturing process revolves around producing models with the highest standards of manufacturing and being continuously innovative in their means of production by using an environmentally-friendly plant process. The company’s environmental stewardship goes beyond vehicle technology and manufacturing, by developing programs that impact the very lives of their customers. Subaru of America is company founded upon their belief in making the world a better place through spreading the Love Promise as far as possible by partnering with a diverse range of organizations.
According to DoSomething.org, in 2009, discarded televisions, computers, peripherals and cell phones totaled to roughly 2.37 million short tons. E-waste represents 2% of America’s trash in landfills but equals to 70% of overall toxic waste. Beyer Subaru believes that it is our responsibility to properly use, store, and dispose of our hazardous waste materials. All household hazardous waste items that Beyer Subaru received were disposed of by licensed hazardous waste disposal firms. Utilizing a certified recycling center is vital in the proper disposal of hazardous waste items. Beyer Subaru encourages everyone to educate themselves and their family and friends on the importance of not only recycling hazardous waste items but learning what constitutes as e-waste.
Many of the products we use day in and day out contain chemicals that are potentially hazardous to our health and the environment if not properly disposed of. E-waste is the informal term for electronic products that are no longer useful to their original consumer. With the proper disposal methods of items like LCD monitors, cell phones, laptops, televisions, video game consoles, fax machines and DVD/VCR players and many more items, we can dramatically reduce the effects of pollution on our environment, reduce the risk of injury to collection workers.
Why should we recycle old electronic devices?
E-Waste recycling not only prevents damage to our environment but also assists manufactures in creating new products for consumers. As the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states, items like cell phones go through an evaluation process in which the used phones are typically inspected for three main categories, Reuse, Refurbishment, and Recycling. In 2009, approximately 38 percent of mobile devices collected for end-of-life management were reused and refurbished and 62% were recycled for material recovery. Products that can be manufactured from recycled recovery include the re-manufacturing of cell phones themselves, refurbishment of garden furniture, license plate frames, non-food containers, and replacement automotive parts just to name a few. There are also many social benefits to donating your used devices to a certified recycler. Many items are undergo a refurbishment process and then are provided to members of the community who are not able to attain items like new cell phones due to financial restrictions. To ensure the proper disposal of your e-waste items, we encourage you to visit the EPA’s eCyclying Certification page, which provides a database of certified electronic recyclers with EPA Waste Generator Identification numbers.
We hope that you will join Beyer Subaru in our Love Promise to help protect our community through your own e-waste management efforts and by sharing your dedication on our Love Promise commitment page.
